What is the Malaysian Culture Group?

Our members are Malaysians and expatriates who reside in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

QUESTIONS ON MEMBERSHIP

How do I join the MCG?
You can choose from two ways:
- Attend an event. Bring a completed membership form with cash or a check made out to the Malaysian Culture Group. Give the form and cash or check to a MCG committee member. OR,

What are the MCG membership levels?
There is just one level of MCG membership.

How much is membership?
Membership costs RM 75 per person per calendar year.

What happens after I sign up?
The MCG Membership Secretary will send an email welcoming you and detailing how to sign up for events. If you do not receive an email from the convenor within 3 weeks of joining, or if you have any questions, please send an email to

Whom should I contact when my information changes – address, cell or home numbers, etc.?

How can I become more involved in MCG?
There are many ways including, but not limited to:

Does MCG have reciprocal agreements with other organizations?

QUESTIONS ABOUT MCG EVENTS

When are events usually held?
Lectures are normally held on the first Wednesday of every month.
General Events are usually held on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Book Groups - Group 1 meets the last Friday of the month; Groups 2 and 3 meet the last Wednesday of the month.
Enak! "meets to eat" on the second Thursday of each month.

Where are lectures and events usually held?
Normally, events are held at venues in the Klang Valley. A popular venue is the Meritz Condo, located on Jalan Mayang near KLCC.

Is there a charge for events?
Yes. The charge depends on the event. Generally, lectures and other events cost RM 15 for each member and RM 25 for non-members. However, the cost may vary. Attendance is often limited to 15 persons – please check the details of each event on the MCG Agenda and Calendar of our website. Enak and the Book Group do not charge a fee for attendance.

Who do I contact if I would like to sign up for a MCG event?
Please email if you would like to attend an event, stating which event or events you wish to attend.

How many events must I attend to keep my membership active?
There is no such requirement. We hope that you will attend as many events as you can.

How many times can a Member bring the same guest?
Once a year.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MCG BOOK CLUB

What is a Book Group?
The MCG Book Club currently has multiple book groups. Each Book Group consists of 15 members who meet once a month to discuss a book (Asian literature, fiction or non fiction). Books are selected by the group at the end of the previous season. Book Group members take turns to host the meetings and the discussion is led by the same or a different member and is based on questions generated by the leader.

What are the commitments required of a Book Group member?
Regular attendance is expected at monthly meetings. Members should have read the chosen book and be ready to discuss it. In addition, each member should host a meeting once a year, lead a book discussion, and submit a write-up for the MCG newsletter.

When do Book Groups meet?
One Book Group meets the last Friday of the month; two others meet the last Wednesday of the month.

How do I join a Book Group?

What is Enak!?
Enak means "delicious" in Bahasa Malaysia. Enak is a group of “foodies” who want to learn about and taste foods from the diverse culinary traditions of Malaysia.

When does Enak! meet?
Enak! meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month (barring public holidays and eating opportunities not available on Thursdays).

How do I join Enak!?

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MCG LIBRARY

What resources are available at the MCG library?
The MCG has its own library containing over 700 books on all kinds of subjects relating to South East Asia and Malaysia, as well as novels for lighter reading and some DVDs.

Where is the library?
The Library is located at the Meritz Condo, the same location as our Lecture Series. Library hours coincide with Lecture dates at the Meritz Condo.

What are the hours of the library?
The library is open to members of the MCG on Lecture days, and when a volunteer librarian is available to assist.
