It seems fitting that we start the second half of the year’s events with a visit to the former home of the gentleman who has been credited with engineering Malaysia’s
rapid modernisation: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad served as Malaysia’s longest running Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003 and Sri Perdana was his official residence from
1983 to 1999. It was therefore witness to many important events in the life of this country but also served as a private home for him and his family.
In keeping with the principle of heritage conservation, the original design and layout of the house has been preserved to a large extent and it is fascinating to see
how the house was run in both a public and private sense, with not only the public rooms on display but also the kitchens, the bedrooms, the private living quarters
and even the barber’s shop!
On July 10th, Tun Dr. Mahathir is opening a new Art Gallery on the premises which will house a collection of contemporary Malaysian art. We will be fortunate to be
able to visit this at the same time as the house.
